Vanessa Quinn, Social Worker and Volunteer with EPIC (Empowering People In Care)

As an advocate for EPIC and someone
who’s volunteered with them for many years I feel that the standards is about young
people having the right to an independent advocate so having an EPIC
representative throughout the process ensures that children are at the centre
of these standards. The new standards help place important emphasis on things such as young people having access to certificates and photographs for when
they’re older. Things that are important to everyone I feel the guide is necessary for young people in care to have access to
these standards and to know that they are at the centre of the standards.
Without a guide existing I feel that young people’s voices could be lost
because they would feel that these standards are another policy document
that isn’t related to them whereas the standards being in guide format for them
means that they will feel supported and understand that this was developed for
them with their input
