Susan – Social Worker – Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital

(guitar music) – Susan Guckenberg,
Oncology Social Worker. I’ve worked in oncology for 17 years at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital and previously to that intermittently during my social work career. I was drawn to the fact that I could make a significant change with patients and families in oncology and that cancer touches
virtually every family on the planet. I also have a personal history,
both of my parents died of cancer diagnoses and I
served as primary care giver to them both. Just recently I had a patient
who had to quit her job to be able to undergo treatment, afterwards had a hard time finding work so I assisted her with gaining
some financial assistance, some of it was pretty significant,
more than she expected. I’m so grateful to those
grant organizations and just calling her she just was in tears she
was so relieved and thankful. One of the roles that I have is tending to distress of our cancer patients and it’s very interesting to go in and see patients as they’re newly admitted who are reported distress on admission and to see how effective, not just me, I’m just one person but how
effective the staff has been in minimizing the distress in
just the first 24, 48 hours. This morning I saw two
people prior to surgery as they came into the
preadmission department. So part of my role is
teaching in supporting people in advance so that they
feel better prepared for the procedure, the surgery and reassure them that I will be there for them afterwards as well.
