Studying Community Welfare: Helen’s Testimonial

Studying Community Welfare: Helen’s Testimonial

I’d work in the disability sector for
over 10 years and Community Welfare was a relevant degree for me to do because
it covered a lot of the theory that I would work with and a lot of the
practical knowledge as well so it was just a relevant course for me to do and
seemed the most interesting as well so it’s obviously an area that I’m
passionate about and it was actually my CEO of Interaction who came to me and
said ‘Helen I think it’s time you got some qualifications’ and yeah so he really
encouraged me to apply. So I decided to do my degree part time because I work full
time. It wasn’t difficult going in as a mature age student I really didn’t know
what to expect because I’ve never experienced Uni before. There were
quite a few other mature age students there so I made some good friends and some
longterm friends as well which was really nice. My perception of my work
after doing the community welfare degree it has changed a lot. Also during doing the degree as well,
it’s really given me the opportunity to expand the programs that I work in so
we’ve been able to take on further funding and more staff and be able to help more
people so completing this degree has really helped. I really encourage people
who already work in the field to think about going to Uni and further developing their skills. I
think it’s really important that what we’re doing out there we’re actually learning
the theory behind this and why we are doing the things we do and you know how
we work with our clients as well.
