Jan Coles, Head of Children’s Services

We’ve restructured our service so that
we can have social workers who can really focus on areas of expertise and
really use their experience and skills to do some really good work and spend
time with children young people and their families we’ve got a front door
this is where we accept contacts from families and referrals from colleagues
in multi-agency settings and this is where we make those
decisions about right can these families be supported through anything other than
a statutory intervention and then we’ve got some wonderful teams full of really
great workers who can work with those families to prevent coming into
statutory intervention but also some families will need to come through for
well-being assessment and for a section 47 investigation and so we need social
workers who are really experienced and equipped to do that work but doing that
work in a way which focuses really carefully on the child focuses really
carefully on their lived experience but also focuses on the strengths within
that family focuses on the strengths within that family so that we can really
work with families and we want to keep families together wherever it’s safe and
wherever it’s in the best interests of that child we need workers who can
once-once a Social Work assessment has identified that a child may need further
care and support then we need workers who can really get to know those
children and get to know those families get alongside them build on the
strengths in that family and work towards the goals that we’ve set
together
