CSUEB Job Panel: “Affordable Housing Industry,” Part 4

My major is accounting so how do I fit into working in
an affordable housing industry we need you desperately whoever wrote that
basically every affordable housing organisation hires accountants to both
help manage the development side so when we’re doing these large-scale real
estate deals there is a ton of accounting work that goes into that also
kind of like how how do you keep these incredibly complex organizations solvent
when we have grants coming in on their resident services side and other kinds
of funding coming in on the development and property management side and making
sure the organization’s books balance is super important job and one that is
necessary at every affordable housing organisation anybody else. Yeah affordable
accounting is actually a really good field just because number one
we have a strong need for every organization employs lots of
accountants in lots of different areas but it’s also a good career track too
because you can. Some of the large organizations have CFO’s they have
controllers means that you can go from being just property account to a
development accounted to a controller to potentially a CFO so there is lots of
growth opportunities for accounts in the affordable housing field. It’s a section 8 issue is it a good
subsidy program for the low-income households? Literally to live in the Bay
Area the voucher is the only way they can stay, without the voucher they have to leave the bay
area because San Francisco is a very extreme example but rents are high in
Oakland they’re they’re growing really throughout the core bay area so it if
it’s a really good source of preserving you know all of the low-income
workers to be able to stay in the Bay Area and benefit in this great region of the country so
obviously it’s not perfect has problems for sure but I mean I think
it it really needs to be expanded because reality is that incomes are either stangnent or decreasing
and rents are growing exponentially and so there’s as that continues to happen it looks
like that trend is going to continue in the short term there’s going to be more and
more people that are not literally going to be able to afford to live in the Bay
Area unless there’s some sort of support and that’s essentially what section 8 is, it is a support system. My organization is actually hiring americorps intern right now so I can
hand you the job description on the way out but a really good resource for
either year round or summer internships in the industry is the local initiatives
support corporation and they have a cohort of americorps who get placed at
different affordable housing groups in the Bay Area and that’s a great place to
start for a variety of different internships but you can also see
internships on the non-profit Housing Association jobs board that we have a
link to at the bottom of this flyer and so internships get posted there as well
as jobs and there are plenty of internships in the industry. Lots of
people get into it through internships so it’s a really great way to test the waters and see if the industry’s for you so I would
encourage you to all those resources have been mentioned throughout the
industry in this pretty big in the Bay Area there lots of internships. And even
if an organization that you’re looking at doesn’t have an internship posted or
anything you should feel free to call them and say hey I’m interested in
learning more about your organization and what you guys do, do you mind if I come
over? A lot of people will be willing to it to hear from someone that sparks
an interest who think that they might want to pursue this and I
personally i’m happier hearing about people who have an interest more than
people who are just calling randomly. Yeah totally great point get connected
to our informational info informational interview network and we
can definitely put you in touch with people who who might not have an
internship program right now but if you express an interest they might create a
position for you so reaching out that way and can also help.
