Continuum of Care: Beyond and Adult Mental Health Crisis

TERESA: WELCOME BACK. YOU ARE WATCHING “CT STYLE.” A PLACE WHERE ADULTS CAN RECEIVE SERVICES FOR MENTAL DIFFERENCES. SARAH: JOINING US NOW , JOHN, ELSA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WITH US. WHEN SOMEONE IS HAVING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS, THIS IS A PLACE THEY CAN TURN. WE ARE A PLACE THAT THEY CAN TURN. WE HAVE A CRISIS RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM THAT IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN CONNECTICUT ACCEPTING COMMERCIAL INSURANCE. IT’S A COMPREHENSIVE MODEL THAT LOOKS AT THE WHOLE PERSON, FOLLOWING THEM FROM THE POINT OF CRISIS THROUGH RECOVERY. TERESA: AND THAT’S KEY, THROUGH RECOVERY. THAT’S RIGHT. IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT THERE IS LIFE AFTER STABILIZATION, WHICH CAN OFTEN BE MORE DIFFICULT FOR INDIVIDUALS STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL HEALTH TO MAINTAIN. BACK TO LIFE ON LIFE’S TERMS. WE HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE MODEL THAT LOOKS AT THE WHOLE PERSON AND FOLLOWS THEM FOR PATHWAYS. WE HAVE PSYCHIATRIST, CLINICIANS , AND NURSES ON THE TEAM. WE ALSO HAVE PIERCE SUPPORT STAFF, INDIVIDUALS WITH LIVED EXPERIENCE AND WELLNESS STAFF THAT CAN OFFER HOLISTIC INTERVENTIONS LOOKING AT EXERCISE, WELLNESS, YOGA. THEIR INTERESTS, THEIR HOBBIES. LOOKING AT WAYS TO PUT MEANING AND PURPOSE ACT IN THEIR LIVES. SARAH: I HAVE HEARD SO MANY TIMES LATELY THAT HOLISTIC APPROACHES ARE GROWING IN POPULARITY. DO YOU FIND PEOPLE ASKING ABOUT IT MORE, LOOKING FOR IT MORE? ABSOLUTELY. WORKING WITH OUR PARTICIPANTS, IT’S AN IMPORTANT INTERVENTION. THEY ARE AS VITAL TO OUR TEAM AS ANYONE ELSE AND WITHOUT THEM, WE COULDN’T DO THIS. TERESA: HOW DO YOU HELP OUT AT CONTINUUM OF CARE? WE NEEDED OUR OFFICE CLEANED, CUSTODIAL. I SAW PARTICIPANTS THAT WE HAVE IN THE PROGRAMS WANTING TO WORK. BUT THEY HAD BARRIERS IN THE WAY OF GETTING JOBS OUT IN THE REGULAR MARKET. SO, I STARTED AN APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM. IT STARTED AS CUSTODIAL. THEN WE ADDED HOUSECLEANING AND LANDSCAPING. AND WE ADDED MOVING. WE STARTED WITH TWO APPRENTICES. NOW WE HAVE 19. WE HAVE CONTRACTS WITH ALLIANCE. WE SUBCONTRACT, WE CLEAN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION. DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. AND WE CLEAN OTHER AREA NONPROFITS. WE DO HOUSECLEANING FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE MENTAL ILLNESS WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO KEEP THEIR APARTMENTS UP. AND OTHER PEOPLE. TERESA: WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE A JOB WHEN THEY ARE IN RECOVERY? I THINK THAT FOR ANYONE IT BRINGS MEANING AND PURPOSE TO THEIR LIVES. SOCIAL NETWORKS OF PEOPLE AND FOR OUR PARTICIPANTS IT’S JUST AS IMPORTANT. ELSE UPON PROGRAM — A ELSA’S PROGRAM, THE FOLKS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE EVEN FOR A LONG TIME, THEY CAN BRING BACK THAT LIVED EXPERIENCE AND THAT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN’T TEACH. SARAH: TELL US REAL QUICK ABOUT THE HOLIDAY BAZAAR AND WHERE YOU CAN FIND THE SERVICES. DECEMBER 7, IT’S A GREAT PLACE WHERE WE HAVE A LOT OF OUR PARTICIPANTS ACTIVELY INVOLVED, THEY ARE THERE SELLING JEWELRY, CLOTHING, ARTWORK. IT’S FROM 10:00 TO 4:00 AND IT WILL BE A GREAT TIME. SARAH: IT’S WONDERFUL WORK. THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. THANK YOU. TERESA: STAY WITH US, WE HAVE MORE “CT STYLE” COMING UP AFTER THE BREAK. WE ARE IN THE KITCHEN. THANK YOU. ♪
