Community Listening – Paul from Mt Isa

Paul Stretton born and bred in Mt Isa
owner of Raps Surf-and-Turf Ice Works. It’s really hot out here so naturally
we use a lot of energy. You know I’ve got a few things here at the ice works, I just
don’t just actually do ice, so I’m a distributor for Streets ice creams
which has got a big freezer I’ve got seafood wholesaler and a meat
wholesaler as well, so that’s all the things I do to burn power and to
provide for the Mt Isa and the North West community. Back in 2005 I was
playing 1,200 a month now I’m paying up to $8,000 a month I use a lot of power
in my business so any chance of bringing down my power bill
I’ll take. Well over the past I suppose six years I’ve upgraded the whole all
the freezers and all the units to energy efficient units so I’ve done that all me
lighting is energy efficient I’ve looked into solar I have not got the roof space
to put enough solar on to really give me any benefit for the cost of it and you
can’t you can’t turn freezers off and on because it’s all comes under safe food
program and things you’v e got to be kept at you know minus-18 constant so you
just can’t turn things off for the sake of it and turn it back on.
Well I’d like to employ a couple more people, it makes the town grow, makes the economy grow it and life’s a little bit easier for me too I don’t
have to work 24/7. They sit in their bubble and Brisbane
and Canberra and they do not come out here and see where the money is generated the wealth, and until they start to get real and you know 25 years time we’ll be out action. Now the latest bill is just over $6194 dollars. I mean who can who can afford that? It’s just getting beyond a
joke.
