Albuquerque Animal Welfare urges people to keep pets warm this winter

WITH COLDER TEMPERATURES ON THE WAY–IT )S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER TO PROTECT OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS FROM HARSH CONDITIONS. NEWS 13 )S SARA YINGLING SPOKE WITH ANIMAL WELFARE ABOUT HOW TO DO TO KEEP YOUR PETS WARM DURING THE WINTER… SARA? ADAM– WHAT PEOPLE MAY NOT REALIZE– IS THAT DOGS CAN SUFFER FROM FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA JUST LIKE US… THE GENERAL RULE OF THUMB TO ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND IS– IF YOU )RE COLD– YOUR PET IS COLD. 1:00 most folks believe that when an animal has fur when they go outside theyre not cold. 1:04 THAT )S WHY THE ALBUQUERQUE ANIMAL WELFARE DEPARTMENT IS URGING EVERYBODY TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AND GET READY FOR WHATEVER THIS WINTER THROWS AT US. IF YOU )RE UNABLE TO KEEP YOUR COMPANION INDOORS– OFFICIALS SAY TO MAKE SURE THE DOG HOUSE IS FULLY ENCLOSED–WITH ONLY ONE HOLE IN THE FRONT TO GET IN AND OUT OF… TO KEEP THEIR DOG HOUSE EVEN MORE INSULATED– USE STRAW– (NOT BLANKETS. OFFICIALS SAY STRAW WILL RETAIN THE ANIMAL )S HEAT– AND HELPS EVAPORATE MOISTURE. CORPORAL THOMAS ROMERO SAYS THEY GET AT LEAST 10 CALLS A DAY DURING THE WINTER ABOUT ANIMALS BEING LEFT OUTSIDE– OR SEEING DOG HOUSES THAT ARE NOT ADEQUATE. RATHER THAN JUST ISSUING A CITATION– ROMERO SAYS THEY TAKE THAT TIME TO HELP EDUCATE AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THOSE PET OWNERS. 3:03 a lot of folks don )t know that so well tell them okay you have a dog house thats good but go get some straw its free. or if they dont have a ride, let me go get it for you and ill deliver it. 3:11 TO KEEP YOUR PETS FROM GETTING HYPOTHERMIA– HERE )S A FEW SIGNS TO LOOK FOR… UNCONTROLLABLE SHIVERING–WEAK PULSE–STIFF MUSCLES– LACK OF COORDINATION– OR PALE GUMS. WE )VE POSTED THOSE TIPS ON KRQE DOT COM. THANKS SARA. OFFICIALS ALSO SAY IF YOU )RE TAKING YOUR DOG OUTSIDE— TO PUT A JACKET OR SWEATER ON THEM FOR AN EXTRA LAYER OF WARMTH. .TODAY…Mostly sunny in

  1. If you can't take proper care of your dog you shouldn't have one.

  2. My parents has a dog at their place right now they always have their dog outside because they don't like having animals inside the house they are currently trying to find a dog house as well

  3. if you own a dog and he's outside 80% of the time you shouldn't own a dog

  4. Why have a dog if your just going chain up outside

  5. On a recent visit to the Rio Rancho dump to rid ourselves of some old carpeting, my sister and I saw the carcass of a young cow in the public dump area. We thought this had to be a mistake so we informed two employees of what we saw and were informed that BOTH Animal Control Services in Rio Rancho and Albuquerque dispose of the animals they euthanize at the shelters at the dumps. This was extremely upsetting on many levels. So not only are these poor unwanted creatures left at the shelters but when they are put to sleep their bodies are dumped with garbage. I'm sure a lot of people would agree that animals are NOT garbage and deserve something better. I informed my vet Adena Robertson of what we found and she was appalled. She told us that most cattle diseases are airborne, so when the bodies begin to decay all that stuff floats in the air. And with the winds we have been having recently all that bacteria is blowing all over the area. She said it was very dangerous, since people have homes close to the dump facilities. I found 3 places in Abq alone that do animal cremations. I'm sure Animal Control can get good pricing on group cremations since they have to pay a fee to dump the caracasses at the dump facilities. We need to have a better plan of disposing of these poor creatures. Not only for the sake of the animal but for the health of our environment. Please do a story on this tragic information. My heart breaks for those poor animals.
