ACS Workers Say They Are Understaffed & Overworked

CAUGHT ON CAMERA A SPEEDING SNOWPLOW LEAVING A ROW OF DAMAGED CARS IN ITS WAKE. GOOD EVENING. I’M DANA TYLER. THE RECENT DEATHS OF TWO LITTLE BOYS IN NEW YORK CITY HAVE LEFT A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AGENCY CHARGED WITH HELPING KEEP CHILDREN SAFE. TONIGHT, WE’RE HEARING FROM THE WORKERS FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF CHILDREN’S SERVICES ABOUT 6- YEAR-OLD ZYMERE PERKINS KILLED IN SEPTEMBER AND 3-YEAR-OLD JAYDENY JORDAN WHO DIED THIS MORNING — JADEN JORDAN WHO DIED THIS MONTH. HAZEL SANCHEZ REPORTS. THE SOCIAL WORKERS HAD A LOT TO SAY. Reporter: THE UNION IS HANDLING ABOUT 54,000 CHILDREN’S CASES ALL ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS. THEY SAY THEY ARE UNDERSTAFFED, OVERWORKED, UNDERPAID AND THEY ARE ASKING FOR THE CITY TO STOP PLAYING THE BLAME GAME AND HELP THEM DO THEIR JOBS. FOR 10 YEARS, CASEWORKER TRICIA HAS BEEN ON THE FRONT LINES FOR THE ADMINISTRATION FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES. IT’S SCARY. IT’S SCARY NOT KNOWING WHAT IS GOING TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR. Reporter: SHE SAID THE RECENT DEATHS OF THE TWO BOYS HIT HER HARD AND SHE IS NOT ALONE. WHEN WE HEAR A CHILD HAS LOST HIS LIFE, IT HURTS ALL OF US. Reporter: THREE ACS WORKERS WERE FIRED IN THE WAKE OF PERKINS’ DEATH. THE UNION REPRESENTING THEM TO SAYS THOSE WORKERS WERE SCAPEGOATED. THEY ARE ENTITLED TO DUE PROCESS. THAT’S OUR JOB TO PROTECT THEIR RIGHTS AND MAKE SURE THAT DUE PROCESS IS HANDED OUT AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO. Reporter: TODAY SHE AND COLLEAGUES LINED THE STEPS OF CITY HALL DEMANDING REFORMS FOR ACS AND CALLING FOR THE DE BLASIO ADMINISTRATION TO REMOVE THE INDEPENDENT MONITOR IT RECENTLY APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE THE AGENCY AND HOW IT APPARENTLY FAILED PERKINS AND JORDAN. DON’T SCAPEGOAT THE WORKERS. ALLOW THE PROFESSIONALS TO DO THEIR JOB TO DO THEIR JOB AND MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO GET ANSWERS TO THE TRAGEDY YOU DON’T COMPOUND THAT TRAGEDY BY BLAMING THE VERY SAME PEOPLE OF PREVENTING THE CONDITIONS. NOT THE BLAME GAME. IT WAS ABOUT FIXING THE SYSTEM. Reporter: THE UNION REPRESENTING SOCIAL AND CASEWORKERS SAYS THE CITY CAN FIX THE SYSTEM REDUCING UNNEEDED PAPERWORK, BRINGING BACK ADDICTIVE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING IN EACH OFFICE AND MORE AGGRESSIVE IN HIRING MORE CASEWORKERS WHICH WOULD LESSEN THE CASE LOAD. EACH WORKER HANDLES AN AVERAGE OF 10 CASES EACH A DAUNTING TASK THAT OFTEN CAUSES EMPLOYEES TO QUIT. QUICKLY BECOMES OVERWHELMING AND THEN A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DO ACS AND THEN THE FIRST TIME THEY GO TO SOMEBODY’S HOME AND YOU SPEND 15 MINUTES BEING CURSED OUT BY SOMEBODY BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN ADDRESS THE ISSUES, THEY SAY THIS IS NOT FOR ME. Reporter: WE REACHED OUT TO THE CITY FOR COMMENT. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE MAYOR RESPONDED ONLY BY EMAIL SAYING, THE INDEPENDENT MONITOR WAS BROUGHT IN TO REVIEW ACS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILDREN AND THEY ARE CONTINUING AGGRESSIVE REFORMS FOR THE AGENCY, BUT THEY DIDN’T GIVE ANY SPECIFICS. THE CITY SAYS IT IS PLANNING TO HIRE MORE THAN 600 CHILD PROTECTIVE SPECIALISTS IN 2017. WE RARELY HEAR FROM THIS THE WORKERS IN THE HOME.

  1. They need the outside monitor because ACS continues to fail our children and families. ACS has the history of doing this and now children are losing their lives. There was 3200 complaints made about ACS IN THE 5 BOROUGHS. ACS has to held accountable at the end of the day. NO MORE EXCUSES.

  2. ACS WORK HARD IN KEEP THE FAMILIES SEPARATED!! FABRICATING LIES TO KEEP THE CASES LONGER SO THEY GET MORE MONEY!! THEY KIDNAPPED MY KIDS THEY SCARE MY CHILDREN !

  3. Wow! Jesus take the wheel 🙏

  4. Maybe if the workers weren’t so fucking nosey and stupid they can take care of the cases that are high priority and not be in peoples business fucktards that they all are
