A message from the Chair of the Social Work at Humboldt State University

For eleven years the Department of
Social Work has been providing financial support to students when they’re in
particular internship settings. In this upcoming year we’re hoping to identify
an expanded source of funding so that when students are in internships they will be
provided financial support which we know leads to student success and
because we want to make sure that internships are successful. We know that
successful internships are likely to lead to jobs after graduation. We’ve identified that many of our
students could strengthen their writing skills so we have a writing support lab
Department, we call it the writing lab, and our intention is to find ways to better
support student writing on campus so when students graduate they have strong
writing skills which are critical for the kind of professional work that
social workers do. We intend to build our relationships with the Centers for
Academic Excellence because we’re really interested in finding ways to strengthen
our relationships with campus support services. In this upcoming academic year
will be the third year that the Department of Social Work has been
leading efforts on campus to address hunger amongst our students. We know that
food insecurity is a barrier to student success that there are very real things we can do to address these needs so
we’ve been engaging in research and practice to enroll eligible students in public programs that assist with their
food needs and also developing a food bank on campus so that hungry students can
have the food that they need to get by. That is one of the things we will be focusing on this.
next year.
